Curiosity: The wealth of Potosí was so immense that in the book Don Quixote, Miguel de Cervantes coined the expression "vale um Potosí," which meant something that was worth a fortune. In 1595, the mine became the largest producer of silver in the world. At that time, it had approximately 150,000 inhabitants, making it the second most populous city in the world and one of the richest, due to the exploitation of silver sent to Spain.
