Totora (Quechua tutura, Scirpus californicus) is an aquatic herbaceous plant in the sedge family, common to swamp regions of South America.
Its stalk measures between one and three meters, depending on the species. It is traditionally used in the construction of boats and floating islands in Lake Titicaca. It has also been used to build the Mata Rangui, a raft used in Kitín Muñoz's expedition that left the island of Pácoa (Chile) bound for French Polynesia, with the aim of proving that the Incas would have been great navigators, reaching distant regions.
