Curiosity: The wealth of Potosí was so great that in the book Don Quixote, Miguel de Cervantes created the expression “worth a Potosí,” which meant something worth a fortune. In 1595, the mine became the largest silver producer in the world. At the time of Don Quixote, it had approximately 150,000 inhabitants, making it the second most populous city in the world (after Paris) and one of the richest, due to the silver exploitation sent to Spain.
