Curiosity: The wealth of Potosí was so great that in the book Don Quixote, Miguel de Cervantes coined the phrase "vale um Potosí," which meant something that was worth a fortune. In 1595, the mine became the largest producer of silver in the world. At the time of Don Quixote, it had approximately 150,000 inhabitants, making it the second most populous city in the world (after Paris) and one of the richest, due to the silver extraction sent to Spain.
